In an unconventional use of drone technology, a startup in Monaco recently carried out its inaugural mission by delivering a luxury payload, including Champagne valued at several hundred dollars, to an offshore luxury super yacht. MC Click, a Monaco-based startup, celebrated its “first luxury drone delivery at sea” on its Instagram page, although it refrained from promoting this endeavor on its official company website.
MC Click, to its credit, primarily focuses on aerial activities that are less contentious than using drones to cater to the affluent. According to the company’s website, it offers drone show performances, captures captivating aerial photos for commercial clients, and is in the process of developing its personal aircraft known as the MC One, similar to the Jetson One commuter craft.
The delivery to the Coral Ocean, a 73-meter (240-foot) mega-yacht that recently underwent a €35 million ($37 million) restoration, included a $440 bottle of 2008 Dom Pérignon Champagne and a can of caviar, which were warmly received by the passengers aboard. Notably, the delivery did not include any shots of public figures like Bernie Sanders or Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the audience.
For those who may find such an activity socially and economically controversial, the positive aspect is that this offshore delivery of luxury goods was described as a one-time endeavor. Furthermore, it was initiated and financially supported by companies that specialize in offering services to affluent individuals.
The downside is that this successful proof-of-concept trial, endorsed by Monaco’s aviation authorities, may lead to regular, on-demand drone deliveries of up to 40 kilograms of luxury items to yachts. Given Monaco’s reputation as a tax haven for the mega-wealthy, it’s not difficult to imagine the service becoming more prevalent in the near future and potentially expanding to yachts located up to 50 miles at sea.
Should this expansion occur, it could lead to further debates about the use of drones to deliver high-end products to those who can afford them without making any effort to obtain them personally. Some companies supporting this concept have even labeled it as an “environmentally conscious” way of catering to the ultra-rich, which has sparked discussions about its ethical implications.
