A recent survey conducted by the consumer rights group Test Achats indicates that a concerning 86% of Belgians have experienced phishing scams, with an average reported loss of €860. While many victims have taken the important step of reporting these incidents to the authorities, it appears that fewer than 1% are able to recover their stolen funds. The findings suggest that only about half of the victims sought assistance, with 30% of them involving the police. Unfortunately, many of those who did reach out for help reported unsatisfactory outcomes and did not receive timely updates regarding their cases. In light of these circumstances, Test Achats advocates for the establishment of dedicated fraud hubs to improve victim support and recovery initiatives. They emphasize the need for more effective collaboration among law enforcement, banks, and online platforms in the fight against cybercrime.
