In November 2023, Maersk commenced the construction of a substantial cold storage warehouse in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. This facility, strategically located beside the Maasvlakte II terminal operated by APM Terminals, is tailored for the storage of temperature-sensitive or frozen commodities such as pharmaceuticals, fruits, meats, and fish. Scheduled to become operational in the fourth quarter of 2024, it is designed to handle more than 43,000 FFE (40 Feet Equivalent Units) annually, positioning it as an integral part of Maersk’s comprehensive logistics services across North-West Europe.
The establishment of this facility aligns with the rising demand for specialized storage solutions for perishable goods that require specific, low-temperature conditions. This cold store in Rotterdam aims to maintain the freshness and quality of these items for prolonged periods, contributing significantly to the efficiency and reliability of supply chains involving perishable goods. Maersk’s expansion into refrigerated storage services complements their existing portfolio, including refrigerated container transportation, thereby extending the longevity of perishables and enhancing supply chain planning for their customers.
This new 40,000 square meter refrigerated warehouse is anticipated to significantly bolster Maersk’s cold chain capabilities, not just in the Netherlands but across the broader North-West European region. Its location next to Maasvlakte II, one of Europe’s most modern terminals, and near the upcoming cross-dock facility in Rotterdam (expected to be operational in January 2024), is intended to streamline and integrate supply chain processes at this pivotal logistics hub.
Key features of the new cold storage warehouse include:
- A status as a customs bonded facility.
- Strategic positioning adjacent to the APMT terminal ground.
- Capacity to store diverse commodities, including fruits, frozen fish, proteins, and pharmaceuticals.
- A commitment to sustainability, as evidenced by a BREEAM Excellent certification and the integration of renewable energy sources like solar panels.
- An in-house veterinary inspection point.
