In a significant move to boost logistics efficiency and sustainability, Chennai Port has unveiled a state-of-the-art railway goods shed at Jolarpet Railway Station. The project, developed at a cost of ₹6.71 crore under a revenue-sharing agreement with Southern Railway, is set to reduce traffic congestion in the Chennai area while promoting eco-friendly logistics solutions.
The initiative includes the introduction of the “TVS Go Green Express” container train, a collaboration between the Chennai Port Authority, Indian Railways, and Container Corporation (CONCOR). This environmentally conscious train service marks a milestone in sustainable transportation. The first train, carrying 29 FEUs (58 TEUs) of auto goods weighing 20 MT each, was successfully dispatched to Ennore Port Rail Siding.
These shipments are destined for African markets, highlighting improved connectivity between Chennai Port and major regions such as Bangalore, Mysore, and Northern Tamil Nadu. This enhanced integration of rail and road logistics ensures faster, more efficient shipping while reducing bottlenecks and offering cost-effective solutions.
By adopting a multi-modal logistics approach, Chennai Port aims to boost trade efficiency and regional economic growth. The project underscores the port’s commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility, showcasing a forward-thinking strategy in modern logistics.
