Italy Maps Automotive Supply Networks

in Manufacturing and Industrial

Italy’s automotive sector supports a broad network of manufacturers, suppliers, logistics providers, technology firms, and other businesses across the economy, according to new research using firm level transaction data.

The study mapped relationships between businesses to identify both direct suppliers and companies connected through indirect supply chain links. In 2022, about €15.6 billion in Italian value added was connected to the European automotive industry, involving around 143,000 firms.

Car manufacturers accounted for about 40% of the value added linked to the supply chain, while upstream suppliers generated the remaining 60%. More than half of the supplier related value came through indirect business relationships, highlighting the depth of the automotive production network.

The supplier base extends beyond traditional vehicle manufacturing. Metals, machinery, rubber, plastics, information technology, wholesale trade, and logistics all contribute to the wider automotive ecosystem.

Northern Italy remains a major center for automotive related activity, with Piedmont and Lombardy together accounting for more than half of total supply chain value added. Other regions with major vehicle production facilities also show strong connections to the sector.

The research found that automotive suppliers tend to be larger and more productive than comparable firms, with higher levels of investment in physical and intangible assets. Direct suppliers also show significant innovation activity across transportation, mechanical, electrical, and environmental technologies.

The findings demonstrate how firm level data can provide a more detailed view of automotive supply networks. Understanding direct and indirect connections can support more informed planning across manufacturers, suppliers, logistics providers, and regional economies.
