The Regional Government of the Azores has launched several initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable transport across the archipelago, focusing on the integration of environmentally friendly solutions within the tourism sector.
Berta Cabral, the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility, and Infrastructure, highlighted the importance of adapting transport services to meet the growing needs of tourists, particularly in popular areas like São Miguel. One of the key measures introduced is a shuttle service to Lagoa do Fogo, operational annually from June 15 to September 30. This service, free for residents, has already accommodated over 50,000 visitors, aligning with the region’s goals for sustainable tourism and environmental protection.
Cabral also emphasized the need to decarbonize road transport and discussed the challenges of transitioning to sustainable vehicles, such as electric buses, due to high initial costs and operational complexities. Despite these challenges, the government remains committed to supporting this transition, working in partnership with the Environmental Fund.
Additionally, the Azores has implemented an Electric Mobility Plan, which includes providing incentives for electric vehicle use and expanding the network of public charging stations. Efforts are also underway to electrify and modernize the bus fleet, contributing to the region’s sustainability goals.
A broader restructuring of the public transport system is also in progress, driven by the increasing demands of tourism. Eight public tenders have been launched under updated legal frameworks, with a focus on ensuring that public transport services remain effective across São Miguel and Terceira. These ongoing initiatives reflect the region’s commitment to adapting its transport infrastructure to meet both environmental and logistical needs.
