FBI Issues Caution to Smartphone Users: Establish a Confidential Code to Counter AI-Driven Scams

in Fraud & Scams, Security & Risk

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released a new advisory to smartphone users regarding the increasing threats posed by generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the realm of cybercrime. As AI technology advances in complexity, fraudsters are exploiting it to produce remarkably convincing counterfeit content, including images, audio recordings, and even real-time video calls, in order to deceive individuals into disclosing sensitive personal information or funds.

To mitigate the risk of these increasingly sophisticated scams, the FBI recommends a series of precautionary measures. A critical step is the establishment of a “secret word” or phrase known only to oneself and trusted family members or acquaintances. This secret word can serve as a verification tool during emergencies, such as an unexpected distress call, to confirm the identity of the individual involved. The FBI underscores the necessity of refraining from sharing personal information with unknown callers or online contacts, advising that if one suspects a fraudulent attempt, it is prudent to terminate the call and reach out to the purported organization using a verified contact number.

These AI-facilitated attacks may encompass anything from deepfake audio recordings of loved ones in purportedly urgent situations to fraudulent video calls featuring celebrities or corporate executives. By implementing a comprehensive security practice, such as utilizing a secret code with close contacts, individuals can greatly impede the ability of scammers to succeed in their fraudulent endeavors.

In light of these advanced tactics, maintaining vigilance is essential. Should you be targeted or suspect that you have fallen victim to such schemes, the FBI encourages you to report the incident to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). By adopting these precautions, users can enhance the protection of their personal data and financial security against AI-driven fraud.
