Six European Union countries are calling for discussions on a common framework for taxing windfall profits in the oil sector, with talks proposed for the September meeting of EU finance ministers.
Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Poland and Austria said a coordinated approach could help address higher energy costs while supporting businesses and consumers. The proposal also calls for an analysis of how foreign profits of multinational energy producers could be included in a targeted framework.
The initiative highlights the importance of coordinated energy policies in supporting supply chain stability, managing fuel costs and strengthening resilience across European markets. EU countries are also seeking greater insight into refinery margins as they assess measures related to energy pricing.
