Cybercriminals Pretend to Be Officials to Offer Fake Cybersecurity Checks

Authorities in Belgium and Ukraine are warning about a new scam where cybercriminals pretend to be government officials and offer fake cybersecurity checks to businesses.

In Belgium, the Centre for Cybersecurity Belgium (CCB) reported cases where people pretended to be from made-up organizations like “FOD Cyberbeveiliging” or “Federal Cybercrime Service.” These scammers reached out to companies claiming they were running internet safety awareness campaigns and offered free security assessments at their locations. They brought their own equipment to connect to the company’s network, which could put sensitive information at risk.

In Ukraine, the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-UA) also reported cases of unidentified individuals claiming to be CERT-UA officials. These scammers asked for remote access to company systems, often recommending software like AnyDesk, supposedly to carry out security checks.

Both agencies stress that real cybersecurity authorities do not conduct audits without being invited. Businesses should always verify the identity of anyone offering these services by contacting the organization through official means. If there’s any uncertainty, companies are advised not to give access and to report the situation to the proper authorities.

This scam serves as a reminder of the need for caution and thorough checks to protect business systems from unauthorized access and potential security threats.
