Cultural and Economic Ties Explored in “Journey to China, Hawaii’s Connection” Series

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Situated approximately 100 miles from southern China, Taiwan has long been at the center of complex geopolitical dynamics. The island, which views itself as an independent nation, is claimed by China as part of its territory, a claim that has led to increasing tensions in recent years. According to University of Hawaii at Manoa China History Professor Shana Brown, Taiwan has operated independently from mainland China since 1949, but recent military activities have cast doubt on the future of cross-strait relations.

The strategic significance of Taiwan, both economically and geopolitically, particularly its pivotal role in the manufacturing of high-tech components like computer chips, underscores the heightened attention from both China and the United States. The U.S. has shown its support for Taiwan through military presence, responding to China’s increased activities in the South China Sea, a vital corridor for international trade that several countries, including the Philippines and Vietnam, also claim.

Amidst these tensions, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii has been facilitating annual trips to China for decades, fostering grassroots connections and cultural exchanges. Russell Lau, of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, emphasizes the importance of these visits in building mutual understanding beyond the official diplomatic standoffs.

Participants of these trips often discover a new perspective on China, challenging preconceived notions shaped by media. For many, including former Hawaiian Electric Industries CEO Constance Lau, these journeys have also been a path to reconnecting with their Chinese heritage and understanding the resilience and work ethic within Chinese culture.

Residents from Fujian, China, express a desire for peaceful coexistence and highlight the value of diversity in fostering a harmonious global community. The sentiment is echoed by individuals like Ying Ying Chen, who dreams of sharing American culture, such as NBA games, with her son, reflecting the personal connections that transcend geopolitical complexities.

However, recent years have seen challenges in US-China relations, including stricter visa requirements for Chinese travelers to the U.S. and the absence of direct flights to Hawaii, leading to a significant drop in Chinese visitors to the islands.

Despite these hurdles, stories of perseverance and success continue to inspire. Immigrants like Jack Zhang and Peter Shi share their journeys from Fujian to Hawaii, embodying the pursuit of the American dream through hard work and entrepreneurship.

The “Journey to China, Hawaii’s Connection” series by Hawaii News Now delves into these stories, exploring the rich tapestry of cultural and economic ties between Hawaii and China, and the enduring hope for a thaw in US-China relations, reminiscent of the natural ebb and flow of the ocean that connects these diverse lands.
