Cainiao Group, the logistics division of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, is significantly expanding its international logistics network to meet the increasing demand for efficient delivery services worldwide.
During the 2024 Cainiao Smart Global Logistics Summit held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, CEO Wan Lin announced plans to develop a second phase of global e-commerce logistics hubs, known as e-Hubs. These facilities are designed to provide a shared infrastructure to support various e-commerce platforms, merchants, and brands for both online and offline sales globally.
The expansion is a strategic move to enhance Cainiao’s end-to-end logistics capabilities and achieve its goal of global deliveries within 72 hours. Currently, Cainiao operates over 800,000 square meters of overseas warehouse space and offers services in 18 countries and regions. The company is accelerating its international efforts, including providing local express delivery services in 10 countries.
Additionally, Cainiao has introduced its latest L4 autonomous vehicles, which are set for large-scale deployment on public roads. These vehicles are designed to facilitate parcel deliveries between stations with minimal human intervention. The deployment of these unmanned vehicles is expected to improve last-mile delivery efficiency and reduce operational costs.
Cainiao has invested heavily in the development of autonomous delivery vehicles since 2016. The company anticipates that over the next three to five years, more than 200,000 unmanned vehicles will be integrated into the logistics industry, driving technological advancements and cost reductions.
Joe Tsai, co-founder and chairman of Alibaba, emphasized Alibaba’s support for Cainiao’s global expansion, aimed at creating a logistics network that addresses future industrial and supply chain needs. The integration of AI-driven technologies is central to this strategy, enhancing Cainiao’s ability to meet diverse customer needs and build a shared infrastructure for global partners.
Cainiao is also enhancing its cross-border logistics capabilities, with a pledge to deliver global parcels within five working days. This service now extends to 14 countries, including major markets in Europe, the United States, and the Middle East.
Industry analysts highlight that Cainiao’s global logistics infrastructure plans align with current trends in cross-border e-commerce, laying a strong foundation for Alibaba’s international market expansion. The introduction of unmanned delivery vehicles is expected to enhance delivery efficiency, reduce operating costs, and support the growth of cross-border e-commerce.
