In the fast-paced environment of a bustling audio show, attending a room solely to greet an industry contact might not always be the best decision. However, when the music catches your attention and the sound quality impresses, it’s easy to find yourself indulging in an unexpectedly extended listening session. Such a scenario unfolded this morning, and the outcome was entirely gratifying.
Margules, a Mexican electronics company, and Raidho speakers from Denmark, both represented by AV Luxury Goods distributor Bruce Ball, appear to possess a unique synergy. This remarkable synergy was first witnessed at the 2022 AXPONA event when a pair of Margules U280-sc tube amplifiers drove a set of Raidho TD3.8 loudspeakers priced at $119,999 per pair. The experience left a lasting impression, leading to an unplanned purchase of one of the Margules amplifiers and an enthusiastic arrangement for a home audition of the TD3.8s (stay tuned for the upcoming review).
During the event in Tampa, Ball had set up a pair of the slightly less expensive Raidho TD2.2s priced at $46,500 per pair, although “lesser” might be a relative term in this context. The TD2.2s immediately captivated listeners with their impeccable performance, described as “tight and right” and “seductive” and “engaging.”
It’s noteworthy that the TD2.2s managed to deliver remarkable low-end bass, despite being powered by only four 6-inch drivers (two for each channel). Carlos Smith, representing Margules Group USA, even took out a tape measure to confirm the driver size, emphasizing that no subwoofers were used in the setup. It’s worth mentioning that the TD2.2s are reported to reach as low as 32Hz, though the actual performance seemed to extend even lower.
Julian Margules, the head of Margules, was present to shed light on the technical aspects that contributed to the holographic sound quality of the system. He hinted at feedback adjustments designed to enhance harmonics over fundamental frequencies, a concept that may surpass casual understanding but was certainly appreciated by the keen ears of the audience, given Margules’ extensive experience and meticulous craftsmanship.
Of course, quality of this caliber comes at a price. The U280-sc amplifiers now retail at $12,000 each (a modest increase from last year’s $10,000), while the SF220 preamp is available for $8,000. The digital source used was a prototype Margules music server, with specifications and pricing details yet to be disclosed. The audio setup was complemented by RSX and Atlas cables.
From solo vocals to solitary percussion notes to full orchestral arrangements, the entire range of sound was consistently top-notch and often approached the realm of exhilaration.
