Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has shared details of a “warm” conversation he had with former President Donald Trump regarding tariffs and the AUKUS defense pact. The discussion follows Albanese’s re-election over the weekend, securing a second consecutive term as Australia’s prime minister. His center-left Labor Party defeated the conservative Liberal-National coalition in the recent election.
In a media briefing on Monday, Albanese expressed appreciation for Trump’s congratulatory message, stating, “I had a warm and positive conversation with President Trump… and I thank him for his very warm message of congratulations.” Albanese noted that the conversation covered topics such as the AUKUS defense agreement and ongoing discussions regarding tariffs. He confirmed that future in-person meetings would further address these matters.
The AUKUS pact, a defense agreement involving Australia, the U.S., and the U.K., was a significant topic in Albanese’s government. In 2023, Australia committed to spending $238 billion over the next 30 years to acquire nuclear-powered submarines as part of this agreement.
Tariffs, particularly those imposed by the U.S., were also a key issue in the Australian election. In April 2023, the U.S. levied a 10% tariff on Australian goods, which Albanese criticized as “not the act of a friend.” A recent survey indicated that concerns over cost-of-living pressures and the impact of Trump’s trade policies were among the top issues for Australian voters.
Meanwhile, Trump addressed the Australian election on Monday, stating that he had not followed the results closely but expressed admiration for Albanese, saying, “I don’t know anything about the election other than the man that won, he’s very good.” Trump also described his relationship with Albanese as friendly, adding that the Australian leader had been “very respectful.”
The U.S. maintains a trade surplus with Australia, and despite the tariff imposition, both nations continue to engage in regular diplomatic and trade discussions.
