Exactly one year ago, on February 21, 2024, APCOA inaugurated its Urban Mobility Hub in Carmarthen, Wales, showcasing its sustainability benefits.
This initiative involved the transformation of a car park in the Welsh town into a multifunctional hub for urban logistics and community services. Notably, it received recognition in the ‘Smart Parking’ category at the 2023 CiTTi Awards for its innovative approach. The hub offers various transportation services, including charging facilities for electric vehicles (EVs), support for cars, bikes, mobility scooters, trains, buses, and taxis. It also features an information screen displaying real-time departures of trains and buses in the area.
Judges were impressed by the hub’s accessibility features, such as disability inclusion schemes and the availability of multiple language options on interactive screens, including Welsh. The project received praise for seamlessly integrating various features to meet the mobility needs of all stakeholders.
The hub is equipped with five 22kW AC fast chargers, 12 V3 Tesla Superchargers, three banks of delivery lockers, and pre-bookable, soundproof private workspaces for up to four people.
APCOA reported a 55% reduction in energy consumption for lighting at the site from February to December 2023, attributed to the installation of new LED systems. Additionally, the hub facilitated over 6,000 EV charging transactions during this period, totaling nearly 250,000kWh of power. Moreover, it claimed to have prevented over 1,000 emission-heavy drop-offs by receiving parcels in its courier lockers.
The company is shifting its focus from conventional car parks to projects like this, aiming to create an integrated ecosystem of Smart City and Smart Mobility services. It aims to contribute actively to the sustainable transformation of urban areas and reduce CO2 emissions.
This initiative reflects a broader trend of repurposing urban spaces, such as car parks, to support transportation and logistics activities. In a similar vein, Logistics Manager previously discussed Delivery Mates’ involvement in establishing and operating a micro hub in a Q-Park car park in Westminster, London. Kevin Savage, COO of Delivery Mates, emphasized the need to move away from large depots and distribution centers and instead focus on placing products closer to urban centers.
