Advanced Water Treatment in Mining: Automatic Scraper Strainers Enhance Membrane System Protection

by Geraldine S.

in Industry, Manufacturing

In a significant advancement for the mining industry’s water and wastewater treatment, Acme Engineering Prod., Inc. introduces innovative automatic scraper strainers designed to protect critical membrane systems from large, suspended particles. This technological breakthrough aims to reduce maintenance and replacement costs associated with ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis membrane filtration systems, which are essential for treating process water and meeting stringent environmental requirements for wastewater.

Membrane technology plays a pivotal role in removing precipitated and suspended solids, organic compounds, inorganic contaminants, and ion separations from process water. It is also crucial in the treatment of acid mine drainage, recovery of metals, reagents, and water in hydrometallurgy, and ensuring mining wastewater reaches acceptable discharge quality. However, the delicate nature of membrane systems makes them susceptible to damage by large particulates, posing a significant challenge.

Automatic self-cleaning scraper strainers from Acme Engineering offer an effective pre-filtration solution, removing solids down to 75 microns and ensuring continuous, uninterrupted flow even during blowdown cycles. Compared to manual cleaning filters or conventional backwash systems, these strainers significantly lower maintenance and membrane replacement costs.

“Membrane filter manufacturers commonly recommend pre-screening influents from 100 to 500 microns to maintain efficiency,” says Robert Presser, Vice President of Acme Engineering. “Our automatic scraper strainers are designed to be installed before the intake plenum of membrane filters, ensuring optimal protection and extending the life of these systems.”

The motorized units continuously remove suspended particulates, effectively addressing limitations associated with conventional manual strainers and automated backwash-style strainers. A spring-loaded blade and brush system, managed by a fully automatic control system, ensures thorough cleaning and resistance to clogging and fouling, even in the presence of large solids and high solids concentration.

This “set-and-forget” system eliminates the need for manual maintenance, with blowdown occurring only at the end of the intermittent scraping cycle to remove solids from the collector area, resulting in liquid loss well below 1% of total flow.

Acme Engineering’s automatic scraper strainers represent a substantial advancement for the mining industry and other sectors with high water usage. By selecting these automated, self-cleaning systems, mining managers can protect delicate membrane systems, reduce operational costs, and focus on other critical aspects of their facilities.
