China’s bio-manufacturing industry achieved significant growth during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–2025), with advancements in scale, technology, and cluster development, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The sector expanded to a total value of 1.1 trillion yuan (approximately $156 billion), with bio-fermentation products representing over 70% of global output. Key sub-sectors, including food additives and bio-pharmaceuticals, achieved annual output values exceeding 400 billion yuan.
China accounted for more than 20% of global patent applications in bio-manufacturing during this period. The industry also established national key laboratories and industrial innovation platforms, while domestically produced high-throughput gene sequencers, large-scale fermenters, and other advanced equipment were successfully applied in industrial operations.
The period saw the rise of leading enterprises with annual revenues surpassing 10 billion yuan, alongside innovative “little giant” companies specializing in niche areas. Nearly 40 pilot-scale capacity-building platforms and several high-quality incubators were launched to support ongoing development.
These advancements highlight China’s continued focus on expanding bio-manufacturing capabilities, fostering innovation, and strengthening its position in the global biotechnology sector.
