Vietnam, Thailand, and South Korea are benefiting from US tariffs on imports from China. Vietnam, in particular, has seen a big increase in its shipping containers sent to the US, more than doubling since 2017 to over 2 million containers expected by 2024. The country’s low production costs, skilled workers, and growing partnerships with the US have made it a popular spot for manufacturing.
Thailand has also enjoyed a rise in exports to the US, especially in agricultural and food products, with its container shipments tripling since 2017 to around 900,000 containers in 2024. In just October this year, exports jumped nearly 25% compared to the same month last year. Officials in Thailand are optimistic, noting that US companies operating there are thriving due to this trade growth.
South Korea has similarly seen growth, with exports of electronics, machinery, and electrical appliances reaching over 1 million containers in 2024, up from 600,000 in 2017.
Even though China’s share of US imports from Asia has dropped from 70.4% in 2017 to 58.9%, it still holds the top spot for container imports. However, Vietnam, Thailand, and South Korea are leading in increasing their volumes and market shares.
The report also mentions that the new US government’s tariff plans might further influence these trends. While current tariffs on Chinese products are lower than earlier discussions, the changes are opening doors for other Asian exporters.
While the outlook is positive, there are still risks. The US has raised alarms about Chinese manufacturers trying to send goods through Vietnam to dodge tariffs. In response, Vietnam has started importing some US products, like soybeans, to help balance its trade surplus.
Overall, the changing trade landscape highlights the shift in global supply chains and the growing importance of Southeast Asia and South Korea in the US market.
