Vietnam’s Robotics Industry Achieves Global Standards

by Geraldine S.

in Automation & Robotics

At the Vietnam Manufacturing Expo 2024, held on August 8 under the theme “Sustainovation: The Path to Manufacturing Efficiency,” Le Anh Son, Deputy General Director of Technology at Phenikaa Group, discussed the company’s development of a robot pallet mover specifically designed for South Korean tech giant Samsung.

Son explained that Samsung, being a major corporation, has specific requirements for robots used in its factories. The robots must fully integrate with the warehouse system, creating a fully automated environment where they can communicate with other devices and perform tasks without human intervention. For example, when the warehouse system signals a shortage, the robot automatically identifies and retrieves the necessary goods.

According to Son, this collaboration provides Phenikaa X with an opportunity to demonstrate its capabilities. The company not only manufactures robots but also develops robot software systems from the ground up, allowing Phenikaa X to tailor its products to meet the unique needs of clients, particularly in terms of integration and communication with other devices.

Samsung’s expectations for the robot include not only basic movement from one point to another but also the ability to detect pallet locations within the warehouse, regardless of their placement. Meeting this high standard requires developers with advanced robotics technology, Son added.

The AMR Pallet Mover robot from Phenikaa X is designed for use in factories, electronics manufacturing, garment production, and automotive parts manufacturing. It is capable of handling heavy loads up to 1,000kg, sensing dynamic loads, and adjusting speed and acceleration based on the weight. The robot complies with the API VDA5050 standard and seamlessly integrates with warehouse management systems and existing automation equipment.

Additionally, the product is equipped with PNKX MMG management software, customized for the factory environment in Vietnam. This software facilitates efficient coordination between humans and robots, optimizing workflows. Currently, this management software is being utilized at Samsung Electronics’ factory in Thai Nguyen.

The AMR Pallet Mover is designed to ISO 3691-4 safety standards and features three layers of protection, including an AI camera for detecting people and objects, a PL-d level LiDAR safety sensor, and a collision sensor. These safety measures represent the highest standard for mobile robots, ensuring the safety of both people and property.

Son expressed confidence in Phenikaa X’s products, stating that they meet global standards in autonomy and safety, comparable to those of major international corporations. He believes that customization will become a defining characteristic of the company.

Foreign manufacturers are often hesitant to modify mass-produced products to meet specific customer needs. Even if the current trial at Samsung’s factory transitions to mass production, Phenikaa X plans to continue investing in research and development to satisfy various customer demands, Son continued.

Son estimated that the cost of a Phenikaa X robot ranges from $32,000 to $48,000, making it suitable for foreign-invested enterprises with high integration and customization needs. The company’s location in Vietnam also offers a geographical advantage, allowing it to provide technical support to local customers at a lower cost compared to bringing in foreign experts.

According to Mordor Intelligence, the global robotics market is expected to grow from approximately $42.59 billion in 2024 to $79.87 billion by 2029, with a compound annual growth rate of 13.4%. The Asia-Pacific region is projected to be the fastest-growing market. In Vietnam, the industrial robotics market is anticipated to reach $309.8 million by 2024, as manufacturing companies increasingly adopt technology and AI-powered robots to enhance productivity and adhere to sustainable development standards.
