The Department of Foreign Trade, under the Ministry of Commerce, has introduced an expedited process for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to obtain licenses for rice exports. The new system, which allows businesses to secure an export license within just 30 minutes, replaces the previous three-day waiting period. This initiative is part of the government’s effort to encourage local rice farmers and traders to expand into international markets.
By migrating the application process to an electronic platform, the Department has significantly reduced the time required for issuing licenses. This shift is expected to support the government’s broader goal of boosting rice exports. Additional measures being considered to further support the sector include reducing mandatory domestic rice stock for exporters and lowering the export permit fees.
In a bid to assist first-time exporters, the Department is also providing educational resources on accessing rice quotas for the European Union and the United Kingdom. These changes are part of a broader strategy to improve Thailand’s rice export sector, aiming to reach 7.5 million tonnes in 2025, though this is a slight reduction compared to 2024’s export of 9.19 million tonnes.
This streamlining of the export process and educational support is anticipated to enhance the country’s competitiveness in the global rice market.
