Northampton, UK — Northampton Town Football Club has received a recommendation for approval from West Northamptonshire Council for its proposed warehouse development adjacent to Sixfields Stadium.
The club plans to develop approximately 19 acres (7.7 hectares) of land next to the stadium, with the project designed to include seven warehouse units capable of accommodating 11 separate tenants. Warehouse heights would range from 9 meters (30 feet) to 17 meters (56 feet), with the largest unit positioned along the perimeter of the stadium’s East Stand.
A final decision on the project will be made by the council’s Strategic Planning Committee at a meeting scheduled for 25 February.
Club Statement
Kelvin Thomas, chairman of Northampton Town FC, described the recommendation as “a very significant and important step for the football club.” He added:
“To gain a recommendation for approval is wonderful news for the club. Everyone is fully aware of the financial challenges faced by football clubs at the moment, and this approval is very important for the financial stability of the club in the medium and long term. Not only will this development benefit the club, but also the local community with the creation of much-needed employment opportunities.”
The project follows the club’s recent completion of the new East Stand at Sixfields Stadium, a construction initiative that took a decade to finalize.
Site and Community Considerations
The proposed development site includes land formerly used as a running track by the Rugby & Northampton Athletic Club, located directly to the east of the East Stand.
Council planning documents indicate that the scheme has received some objections from local groups, including the St James Spencer Residents Association and the Northampton Town Football Club Supporters Trust. The committee’s deliberations will consider both the benefits and concerns related to the project.
If approved, the warehouse development is expected to bring additional commercial activity to the area and provide new employment opportunities for the local community, while supporting the club’s long-term financial planning.
