Zero-Day Vulnerabilities in Ivanti Connect Secure and Policy Secure Exploited by Suspected Chinese Hackers

Security researchers at Volexity have identified a pair of zero-day vulnerabilities in Ivanti Connect Secure (ICS) and Policy Secure, which have been exploited by suspected China-linked nation-state actors to compromise fewer than 10 customers. The hacking group, tracked as UTA0178, used the vulnerabilities in an exploit chain to achieve unauthenticated command execution on the ICS devices. The two vulnerabilities, CVE-2023-46805 and CVE-2024-21887, allowed attackers to bypass authentication and execute arbitrary commands on the affected appliances. Ivanti has acknowledged the issue and plans to release patches starting from the week of January 22, 2024. Meanwhile, users are advised to apply a workaround to mitigate potential threats. The attacks involved stealing configuration data, modifying files, downloading remote files, and deploying a custom web shell to maintain persistent access.
