South Africa has officially gained market access to export fresh table grapes to the Philippines following a decade of negotiations. This achievement is considered a significant milestone for South Africa’s agricultural sector, contributing to the continued growth of the country’s economy.
To ensure successful exports, South African exporters must meet the required phytosanitary and food safety standards, as outlined in the final import conditions for fresh table grapes to the Philippines, according to Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen.
The South African Table Grape Industry (Sati) reports that approximately 55% of South Africa’s table grape exports are destined for the European Union, while 20% are sent to the United Kingdom. During the 2022/23 season, the country exported a total of 63 million cartons of table grapes, providing employment to around 86,870 seasonal workers and 14,843 permanent employees.
Minister Steenhuisen highlighted that the opening of the Philippine market is expected to further the Department of Agriculture’s empowerment initiatives, particularly by encouraging the involvement of black farmers in international export markets.
The expansion of agricultural market access is anticipated to drive production growth, boost exports, and enhance the agricultural sector’s overall contribution to South Africa’s GDP. A formal announcement will be made when the first consignment is ready for export.
