Robotics Employee Fatally Injured by Industrial Robot in South Korea

in Automation & Robotics, Industry

In a distressing incident in South Korea, an employee of a robotics company, a man in his 40s, was fatally injured by a robotic arm while conducting an inspection at a pepper sorting facility. The tragic event unfolded in South Gyeongsang province, where the robotic arm, designed to automate the process of lifting and organizing boxes of peppers onto pallets, erroneously identified the man as an object to be handled.

The South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that during the inspection, the robotic arm grasped the employee and forcefully compressed him against a conveyor belt. The severe impact caused critical injuries to his face and chest. He was immediately transported to a hospital, but unfortunately, he did not survive the injuries sustained during the accident.

The inspection was part of a preparatory procedure for a test run of the robot, which had been scheduled for 8 November. This test was intended to follow up on a previous plan set for 6 November but had been postponed to address and rectify problems detected with the robot’s sensor system.

The employee, who was affiliated with the company responsible for manufacturing the robotic arm, was conducting these essential checks late into the night on Wednesday when the robot malfunctioned with fatal consequences. This incident has raised significant concerns about the safety measures and protocols in place for the operation of industrial robots, particularly in environments where human workers are present.

In response to this tragic event, an official from the Donggoseong Export Agricultural Complex, the ownership entity of the pepper sorting plant, has publicly advocated for the creation and enforcement of a more “precise and safe” operational system for robots used in such industrial settings. The call for enhanced safety measures underscores the urgent need to prevent future occurrences of similar accidents.

This recent fatality is not an isolated incident within the South Korean industrial landscape. In March, a man in his 50s suffered serious injuries after being trapped by a robot at an automobile parts manufacturing plant. These incidents collectively highlight the critical challenges and potential hazards associated with integrating robotics into industrial and manufacturing processes. They serve as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent safety standards, robust sensor technologies, and comprehensive training for all personnel involved in the operation and maintenance of automated systems, to ensure the protection of human lives in increasingly automated work environments.
