Insomniac Games Faces Cyberattack, Hackers Demand Ransom in Bitcoin

Insomniac Games, a subsidiary of Sony and the developer of popular video games like Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank, has reportedly been targeted in a cyberattack. The Rhysida hacker group is said to have infiltrated the company’s systems and is demanding a ransom of over $2 million, payable in Bitcoin (50 BTC).

Sony has acknowledged the security breach and is conducting an investigation. In a statement to Eurogamer, Sony confirmed their awareness of the cyberattack on Insomniac Games and assured that they are looking into the matter. They also mentioned that, as of now, there is no indication that other divisions within Sony Interactive Entertainment or Sony Corporation have been affected.

According to CyberDaily, the hackers have allegedly accessed sensitive data, including U.S. passport scans and W9 tax forms, which contain personal information of current or former employees of Insomniac Games. The breach is also said to include game screenshots from the upcoming Wolverine game, based on the Marvel superhero.

The Rhysida group has reportedly set a one-week deadline for Insomniac Games to respond to their ransom demand. The group is also purportedly auctioning the stolen data, with bidding starting at 50 BTC.

The Rhysida hacker group has been active this year, with reports linking them to cyber incidents involving the British Library and a hospital in the UK.

This incident with Insomniac Games is not isolated in the gaming industry. In 2022, Rockstar Games experienced a significant leak of content from the development of Grand Theft Auto 6. The responsible hacker was later convicted in the UK.

In a separate incident, Sony also faced a cybersecurity breach this year, with the RansomedVC hacker group allegedly compromising Sony’s computer systems. The extent of the impact from the Sony hack was estimated to potentially affect over 62 million individuals. The full scope of the Insomniac Games breach, however, remains unclear.

As of now, Insomniac Games has not provided a public statement regarding the cyberattack.
