Western Australia is moving closer to developing its first dedicated electric heavy-freight charging network, supporting the transition toward cleaner and more efficient road transport. The proposed network would initially connect key freight locations between Perth and Bunbury through high-capacity charging hubs.
The planned infrastructure would include three heavy-vehicle charging sites with multiple charging bays, alongside battery-swapping facilities. This approach could help electric trucks reduce charging downtime and maintain more efficient freight schedules on major industrial corridors.
The initiative also highlights the importance of integrating vehicles, charging infrastructure, energy supply, and freight demand into one connected system. Fleet operators are assessing charging requirements and network integration to ensure that electrification can support real-world logistics operations.
Battery swapping could provide an additional option for long-haul and heavy-duty fleets, allowing vehicles to return to service more quickly while reducing reliance on lengthy charging stops. The development could also create a stronger foundation for renewable-powered freight operations as Australia expands its clean-energy infrastructure.
