During the presentation of the Interim Budget 2024-2025, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman outlined Indian Railways’ ambitious plans to introduce three new railway corridors aimed at bolstering efficiency, reducing operational costs, and catalyzing GDP growth.
The proposed railway corridors encompass three key areas: the energy, mineral, and cement corridor, the port connectivity corridors, and the high traffic density corridors. Sitharaman emphasized that these strategic initiatives, aligned with the PM Gati Shakti initiative, are designed to facilitate multi-modal connectivity, streamline logistics operations, and mitigate transportation expenses.
According to Sitharaman, the anticipated decongestion of high-traffic corridors resulting from these projects will not only optimize the operations of passenger trains but also enhance safety standards and expedite travel times for commuters. She underscored the significant contribution of these corridor programs, coupled with dedicated freight corridors, in propelling GDP growth and lowering overall logistic costs.
While highlighting the progress of existing projects, Sitharaman noted the successful operation of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor, with substantial advancements made on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor.
In addition to infrastructure enhancements, Sitharaman announced plans to upgrade 40,000 conventional rail bogies to Vande Bharat standards, aiming to enhance passenger safety, convenience, and overall travel experience. Furthermore, she stressed the pivotal role of urban transformation, advocating for the expansion of Metro Rail and NaMo Bharat (Regional Rapid Transit Systems) across major cities. The expansion efforts will prioritize transit-oriented development to meet the evolving transportation needs of urban populations.
The inauguration of the inaugural NaMo Bharat train in October 2023 marked a significant milestone, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the completed 17-km stretch from Sahibabad to Duhai Depot in Uttar Pradesh. Looking ahead, the completion of the full 82-km Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor by 2025 promises to revolutionize intercity connectivity and commuter mobility in the region.
In conclusion, Indian Railways’ ambitious endeavors to develop new railway corridors and upgrade existing infrastructure underscore the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable economic growth and modernizing transportation networks across the country.
