Cybersecurity Concerns at Sellafield, Europe’s Hazardous Nuclear Site

A recent investigation by The Guardian has raised significant cybersecurity concerns at Sellafield, considered Europe’s most toxic nuclear site, located in the UK. The report, which involved journalists Anna Isaac and Alex Lawson, revealed attempts by cyber groups, allegedly linked to Russia and China, to infiltrate the site’s systems.

A spokesperson from Sellafield emphasized the site’s robust cybersecurity measures, stating that their systems are fortified with multiple layers of protection. They highlighted that critical networks, vital for safe operations, are isolated from the general IT network, ensuring that a breach in the IT system would not compromise these essential networks. Over the past decade, Sellafield has reportedly heightened its focus on cybersecurity, working in close collaboration with regulators. This has led to a reduction in the level of enhanced regulation required.

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) acknowledged that Sellafield has not fully met its cybersecurity standards. However, it refrained from commenting on specific breach incidents or allegations of a cover-up, citing ongoing investigations.

Following the publication of The Guardian’s investigation, both Sellafield and the ONR stated that they have no records indicating successful cyberattacks by state actors as described in the report. They have issued several public responses on the gov.uk website.
