Gabon is advancing its role in the global critical minerals sector through new investments aimed at expanding manganese processing capacity and strengthening its position in the electric vehicle battery supply network.
The country is developing plans with an international mining partner to establish new manganese processing facilities that could handle up to 700,000 tonnes of ore annually by 2031. The initiative supports Gabon’s strategy to increase local value creation by moving further into processing and downstream mineral industries.
A key focus of the development is the production of battery-grade manganese materials, supporting growing demand from electric vehicle and energy storage industries. Additional facilities will also support manganese products used in specialty steel manufacturing, helping diversify the country’s industrial capabilities.
The expansion reflects a broader shift across resource-rich economies toward building stronger domestic mineral value chains. By increasing processing activities, developing industrial infrastructure, and supporting local expertise, Gabon aims to play a larger role in global supply networks for essential materials.
