Vietnamese automaker VinFast showcased its commitment to the US electric vehicle (EV) market at CES 2023 in Las Vegas, revealing a midsize pickup truck and a compact utility EV named VF3. The midsize electric truck, referred to as the VF Wild, and the city-friendly VF3 aim to tap into the growing interest in electric mobility in North America.

The VF Wild electric truck concept boasts features such as a wing-shaped LED lighting signature, sculpted bodies, and a unique power-folding midgate in the truck bed that expands its length from five to eight feet. While specific details such as range, pricing, and production timing for the VF Wild were not disclosed, the concept aligns with the demand for electric trucks in the US.

The VF3, a two-door “mini-eSUV” designed for urban environments, targets a range of 125 miles. With its compact size and affordability, the VF3 aims to cater to budget-conscious consumers looking to make the switch to electric vehicles. VinFast plans to start accepting reservations for the VF3 later this year, though delivery timing was not specified.

VinFast, founded in 2017, entered the EV manufacturing landscape in 2021 and has received substantial financial support from its founder and Vietnam’s richest man, Pham Nhat Vuong. Despite facing challenges in the US market, including the critical reception of its VF8 model, VinFast delivered around 21,200 units in California by the third quarter of last year.

The company envisions future expansion by establishing manufacturing facilities in the US, India, and Indonesia. VinFast’s EV lineup also includes the VF 5, VF 6, and VF 7, all designed in collaboration with Pininfarina and Torino Design.

While the showcased concepts at CES indicate VinFast’s ongoing commitment to EV innovation, the company faces hurdles such as stock performance, which currently trades below the listing price, and the need to address quality concerns highlighted by previous reviews. VinFast’s journey in the US EV market will likely involve overcoming these challenges to establish itself as a credible player in the growing electric vehicle landscape.
