Vietnam Airlines will begin using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for all flights departing from Europe starting January 1, 2025. The airline becomes the first Vietnamese carrier to incorporate SAF in its operations.
The use of SAF will start at a minimum rate of 2% for these flights, with the percentage expected to gradually rise to 6% by 2030, 20% by 2035, and 70% by 2050. For flights departing from the UK, the airline will begin with a 2% SAF blend from 2025, with increases to 10% in 2030 and 22% by 2040.
A representative from Vietnam Airlines emphasized that this initiative marks a significant step for the airline as it leads the way in Vietnam’s broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions. The airline is committed to helping meet international goals for net-zero emissions by 2050. This move is also aimed at offering passengers environmentally responsible flight options while fostering sustainability in the aviation industry.
Vietnam Airlines previously conducted its first SAF-powered flight from Singapore to Hanoi on May 27, 2024, becoming the first Vietnamese airline to operate a commercial flight using sustainable fuel.
Despite the higher cost of SAF, which is currently two to six times more expensive than traditional jet fuel, Vietnam Airlines has committed to this initiative. The airline estimates an additional cost of approximately 4.8 million USD annually for operating flights to and from Europe.
In addition to SAF usage, the airline has implemented several measures to reduce its carbon footprint, including using newer-generation aircraft, optimizing flight routes, and monitoring fuel consumption and emissions closely. These efforts contributed to a reduction of nearly 70,000 tonnes of CO2 in 2024.
Vietnam Airlines plans to continue working with partners across its supply chain to expand SAF usage and further promote sustainable practices within the aviation sector.
