The Victorian government has released a new report analyzing the grain supply chain in western Victoria, aimed at enhancing transport network planning for the state’s $4.4 billion grain industry.
The study covers 18 local government areas from Geelong to the South Australian border and examines grain transport flows within Victoria, as well as cross-border movements from South Australia and New South Wales.
A key recommendation of the report is the promotion of rail freight to maximize recent infrastructure investments at commercial ports, including Geelong, Portland, and Melbourne.
Victorian Ports and Freight Minister Melissa Horne emphasized the importance of an efficient supply chain for farmers, stating that improving transport access and efficiency is crucial for managing costs.
Victorian Agriculture Minister Ros Spence highlighted the role of rail in the future of grain transportation, underscoring ongoing efforts to ensure the long-term resilience of the supply chain.
