Vice Media, a once-prominent digital media company, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as it grapples with financial challenges and shifts in the media landscape. The company’s bankruptcy filing aims to shield it from creditors and facilitate a reorganization or sale of assets.

The bankruptcy announcement follows Vice’s recent decision to cancel its flagship program, Vice News Tonight, and implement layoffs affecting over 100 employees out of its 1,500-person workforce. In addition to the layoffs, Vice also revealed the discontinuation of its Vice World News brand, streamlining its operations under the Vice News umbrella.

Under Chapter 11, Vice has reached an agreement to sell its assets to a consortium of lenders, including Fortress Investment Group, Soros Fund Management, and Monroe Capital. The deal involves a $225 million credit exchange, with the possibility for other parties to submit competitive bids.

Vice Media, founded in 1994 as a punk magazine in Montreal, expanded its reach globally over the years. Known for its bold and unconventional journalism, the company diversified its portfolio to include film and TV production, an in-house marketing agency, and the ownership of brands like Refinery 29 and Unbothered.

Despite its initial success and a valuation of $5.7 billion in 2017, Vice has faced profitability challenges in recent years. The company secured $30 million in debt financing from Fortress Investment Group in February 2023 to address its financial constraints.

The bankruptcy filing aligns with a broader trend of media industry challenges, marked by layoffs and closures at various media outlets, including BuzzFeed Inc’s decision to shut down BuzzFeed News. Economic uncertainties and declining digital advertising sales have also impacted major tech companies like Google and Facebook.

Vice Media’s Co-CEOs, Bruce Dixon and Hozefa Lokhandwala, expressed optimism about the sale process, emphasizing its potential to strengthen the company and pave the way for long-term growth. They underscored their commitment to maintaining authentic journalism and content creation that resonates with their audience and remains valuable to partners.
