Combilift Introduces Safe-Lift Technology to Enhance Forklift Safety

Combilift, a leader in forklift manufacturing, has introduced a new safety device, the Safe-Lift, designed to reduce the risk of forklift overloading through audible and visual alerts. This innovation aims to address the significant safety concerns associated with forklift operations. Forklifts, essential in various industrial settings, are often prone to overloading, which can lead to accidents and damage. The Safe-Lift device is equipped with a strain sensor on the mast section and a cut-out valve on the hydraulic line, which automatically disables lifting when potential overload is detected.

Martin McVicar, Managing Director of Combilift, emphasized the importance of safety enhancements in forklift operations. “While many operators believe their current practices are safe, there is always room for improvement,” McVicar stated. “The Combi Safe-Lift, currently optional, represents a straightforward and cost-effective solution that we believe should become standard on all counterbalance trucks.” The Safe-Lift not only protects operators and other personnel but also helps prevent product damage and costly repairs. It is particularly useful when handling non-uniform or liquid loads, where identifying the center of gravity is challenging.

The system alerts operators to potential overloading with an audible alarm and a “load moment indicator” that flashes green, amber, or red depending on the severity of the load situation. This feature is especially crucial in heavily regulated industries like those in Australia, where safety is paramount. Chris Littlewood, Combilift’s Country Manager for Australia, noted the positive reception from local clients. “Our customers in Australia’s heavy industries, who aim for zero-harm environments, have expressed strong interest in this solution,” said Littlewood. He anticipates that most new forklift orders will include the Safe-Lift feature.

Despite the reliability of the Safe-Lift, Littlewood advises that it should not be solely relied upon to prevent overloading. Regular training and awareness are essential for operators to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions. “Understanding load capacity, driving slowly, and keeping loads low are key practices for safe forklift operation,” he added. Combilift’s commitment to continuous improvement in safety reflects its dedication to innovation and its customers’ well-being in industrial operations.
