Universal Robots, a pioneer in collaborative robotics, showcased its latest advancements at Automate 2024, North America’s premier automation exhibition. The event featured over 50 Universal Robots demonstrating various applications, highlighting the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into robotics.
The company emphasized the concept of “physical AI,” where AI extends beyond digital environments to empower robots with human-like perception. This development enables robots to handle tasks with variability without the need for prior programming or instruction. According to Ujjwal Kumar, Group President of Teradyne Robotics, Universal Robots’ parent company, this advancement marks a shift towards intelligent automation, where robots become adaptive partners in enhancing workplace productivity and creativity.
Among the showcased innovations were Universal Robots’ newest cobot models, the UR20 and UR30, designed to automate tasks with increased payload, reach, and torque. Additionally, the company demonstrated AI-powered autonomous inspection solutions, featuring path planning up to 80 times faster than current methods, thanks to collaboration with NVIDIA.
Several partner solutions leveraging Universal Robots’ platform for AI applications were also highlighted at the event. These included advancements in bin picking technology by partners like Photoneo and Siemens, showcasing AI-enabled solutions for complex picking tasks.
Universal Robots also introduced new cobot models capable of tasks such as tightening screws, palletizing, and welding with coordinated motion. These advancements aim to address the evolving needs of industries, particularly in manufacturing and automation.
To support optimal performance and uptime for its cobots, Universal Robots unveiled UR Care, a new service offering providing onsite repairs and 24/7 remote support.
The event also featured joint demonstrations with sister company Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR), showcasing mobile cobots for versatile task execution. Additionally, visitors had the opportunity to explore the UR ecosystem through guided tours and engage in educational activities at the UR Education Zone.
