During National Apprenticeship Week between February 5th and 11th, UK Transport Minister Guy Opperman MP praised the inaugural year of the Generation Logistics campaign, emphasizing its role in transforming perceptions of the logistics sector.
Minister Opperman lauded the joint efforts of businesses and the government in changing attitudes towards logistics careers, highlighting their importance in driving economic growth.
Speaking at a parliamentary reception honoring young talents in logistics, Minister Opperman emphasized the campaign’s mission to raise awareness among the public and youth. He stressed the significance of maintaining a skilled workforce to support a resilient supply chain essential for economic prosperity.
“Generation Logistics is reshaping how we perceive roles in the logistics sector,” said Minister Opperman. “A strong supply chain is vital for economic growth, and we are dedicated to nurturing a skilled workforce to facilitate the smooth flow of goods.”
The celebratory event, attended by representatives from 50 companies and trade associations, marked the successful first year of the campaign. Generation Logistics ambassadors, actively engaging with potential employees in educational institutions, were among the attendees, showcasing the sector’s diverse opportunities.
A key highlight of the event was the unveiling of the latest Generation Logistics careers guide, designed to educate teachers and careers advisers about the various opportunities within the logistics profession.
Bethany Windsor, the programme director for the campaign, highlighted its significant achievements, with awareness among target audiences increasing by 11% and positive perceptions of the sector rising by 140% in its inaugural year.
“Logistics offers unparalleled opportunities for young professionals at all levels, yet it remains largely untapped by educators and careers advisers,” said Windsor. “In the campaign’s second year, we are expanding our outreach to educators with the new careers guide and collaborating with STEM Learning to integrate logistics into the curriculum.”
With continued support from sponsors and enthusiastic ambassadors, the Generation Logistics campaign aims to position logistics as a premier career choice for young people across the economy in 2024 and beyond.
