The United Kingdom’s free trade agreements with Australia and New Zealand are scheduled to take effect on May 31, marking a significant step in the strengthening of relations among the Commonwealth allies in anticipation of King Charles III’s coronation.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins jointly announced the commencement of the trade deals as they prepare to engage in talks in London in the lead-up to the coronation ceremony.

Although King Charles serves as the official head of state for Australia and New Zealand, the current leaders of these Southern Hemisphere countries personally advocate for severing ties with the monarchy.

In a statement on Thursday, Sunak emphasized the new chapter in the friendship between the countries and highlighted the trade deal’s potential to unlock opportunities, drive growth, create jobs, and contribute to a more prosperous future.

Hipkins referred to the trade agreement as a “gold-standard” deal, underscoring the strong relationship between the UK and New Zealand. The trade agreements ensure that over 99 percent of Australian and New Zealand exports to the UK will be exempt from duties.

Officials in New Zealand estimate that the trade deal could boost the country’s economy by up to 1 billion New Zealand dollars ($629 million), particularly through increased sales of agricultural products like wine, beef, and butter. Similarly, UK officials project that the agreement will contribute to an £800 million ($1 billion) increase in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

The trade deals also include provisions to expand the working holiday schemes of the involved nations, facilitating easier employment opportunities for young jobseekers.

Since the UK’s exit from the European Union in 2020, the country has been actively seeking new markets for its exports, emphasizing the importance of these trade agreements as it moves forward independently.
