The UK government has announced funding totalling £1.1 million to support nine initiatives testing innovative technologies across the freight and logistics sector. Each project has received up to £130,000 to trial solutions aimed at improving efficiency, sustainability, and worker well-being.
Projects supported include lightweight trailers, electric cargo trailers that can be pulled by bikes, AI-powered logistics platforms, and sensor-based systems designed to enhance safety and sustainability at ports. Other initiatives focus on high-speed rail freight, predictive movement intelligence, and advanced data analysis tools for planning and operations.
The funding forms part of the broader Freight Innovation Fund, launched in 2023, which seeks to address challenges such as decarbonisation, operational efficiency, and staff upskilling. Since its inception, the fund has supported 29 projects with £3.9 million in funding, helping companies secure over £100 million in additional investment and create 44 jobs.
The UK’s aviation, maritime, and decarbonisation minister stated that the funding will allow new technologies to be trialled on roads, ports, and railways, supporting immediate improvements in freight operations and contributing to economic growth. Additional government initiatives, such as the Transport Research and Innovation Grants, continue to provide support for innovation in transport and logistics.
