A global technology company in Japan is strengthening supply chain sustainability by working with suppliers to improve product level carbon data and support value chain decarbonization.
Since 2023, the company has adopted a standardized methodology for collecting and exchanging product carbon footprint data across its international supplier network. The initiative supports its goal of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions across its global value chain by 2040.
The program began with a pilot focused on the upstream supply chain of a laptop screen. The successful pilot provided a foundation for expanding the approach to a broader supplier network.
More than 60 suppliers, over 50 employees and teams across Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania have participated in the initiative. Around 80 supplier meetings, training sessions and instructional activities have also been conducted to support consistent carbon data collection.
Cross functional collaboration has been central to the program, bringing together sustainability, environmental management, procurement, information technology and business teams to improve data systems and strengthen supplier engagement.
The company also enhanced its digital sustainability platform to support both product level and organizational carbon footprint calculations. The platform achieved alignment with the standardized methodology in November 2024, enabling suppliers across different regions to exchange carbon data using a consistent technical framework.
The initiative has expanded beyond its initial product category, with one third of suppliers now sharing product or organizational carbon footprint information. This growing data network provides greater visibility into emissions across the value chain and supports more informed sustainability planning.
Industry collaboration has also helped expand standardized carbon footprint practices among more than 130 businesses in Japan, demonstrating how shared data frameworks can support sustainability efforts across industries.
Looking ahead, the initiative will focus on strengthening carbon data verification, expanding supplier participation and combining carbon footprint information with internal business data to support future impact analysis and simulations using artificial intelligence.
The development highlights how standardized carbon data, supplier collaboration and digital platforms can strengthen supply chain transparency while supporting sustainable sourcing and long term decarbonization.
