U.S. Companies Maintain Investment in Sustainability and ESG Initiatives

in Green Supply Chains

A recent report by Information Services Group (ISG) indicates that U.S. companies are continuing to invest in digital initiatives focused on sustainability and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts. The report highlights the growing demand for digital solutions that enhance corporate sustainability practices, despite ongoing political and regulatory uncertainties.

According to the 2024 ISG Provider Lens™ Sustainability and ESG report, businesses are prioritizing digital sustainability projects to maintain brand reputation, mitigate risks, and improve operational efficiency. The findings suggest that cost reductions and enhanced reporting accuracy are key drivers behind these initiatives.

Matt Warburton, ISG’s Digital Sustainability lead, stated that organizations recognize the increasing likelihood of mandatory ESG reporting and are taking proactive measures to prepare.

The report also notes that demand for environmental sustainability solutions is outpacing interest in social or governance-focused initiatives. Managed services and data platforms are among the fastest-growing sectors within ESG technology, driven in part by evolving regulatory requirements.

ISG’s research highlights that businesses are forming customized technology partnerships to address sustainability challenges, as no single solution applies universally. Companies in asset-intensive industries, such as manufacturing and transportation, are leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning to support ESG-related objectives. These technologies are playing an increasing role in streamlining reporting processes, although the report indicates that demonstrating return on investment remains a consideration.

Many U.S. organizations are incorporating sustainability initiatives within broader digital transformation strategies, allocating between 5 and 10 percent of total program budgets to these efforts. According to Jan Erik Aase, a partner and global leader at ISG Provider Lens Research, these investments can lead to cost savings, improved customer retention, and enhanced talent acquisition.

The report also examines additional industry trends, including the impact of European ESG regulations and the role of artificial intelligence in shaping social sustainability discussions.

ISG evaluated 100 service providers across four categories: Strategy and Enablement Services, OT & Industry-Specific Solutions, IT Solutions, and Data Platforms and Managed Services. Companies such as Accenture, IBM, and Wipro were identified as leaders in multiple categories.

Additionally, PwC was recognized as the ISG CX Star Performer for sustainability and ESG services, receiving high customer satisfaction ratings in ISG’s Voice of the Customer survey.
