Market Concerns Persist Despite First Republic Rescue

The attempt to rescue First Republic has not quelled market concerns, leading to a second consecutive day of steep losses for US regional banks. Despite the sale of First Republic to JPMorgan Chase, investors remain apprehensive about the stability of the US banking system.

PacWest Bancorp, based in Los Angeles, witnessed a nearly 30 percent plunge in its share price, while Western Alliance Bank and KeyCorp experienced declines of 21 percent and 10 percent, respectively. Even major lenders like Citigroup and Bank of America faced losses, although less severe in comparison.

The market turmoil follows the government-backed rescue of First Republic, orchestrated by JPMorgan Chase and overseen by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The troubled lender, under pressure since the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank last month, marks the second-largest bank collapse in US history after Washington Mutual Bank in 2008.

Despite the rescue deal, concerns persist, raising questions about a potential “confidence crisis” that could impact any bank in the country, according to Jake Dollarhide, CEO of Longbow Asset Management. The move by JPMorgan Chase involved acquiring a substantial majority of First Republic’s assets without taking on its corporate debt. The FDIC provided $50 billion in financing and agreed to cover 80 percent of certain loan losses for up to seven years.

The ongoing scrutiny of regional banks intensified after the collapses of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in March, heightening fears of a broader crisis of confidence within the banking sector. The situation highlights the challenges faced by the industry, even after intervention and rescue efforts by major financial institutions and regulatory bodies.
