US President Donald Trump has announced plans to provide advanced defense equipment to Ukraine through NATO countries and outlined potential new tariffs if no peace agreement is reached within 50 days.
Following a meeting with NATO chief Mark Rutte in Washington, Trump stated that the United States would deliver “top-of-the-line weapons” to Ukraine, facilitated by European partners. Rutte confirmed that European countries would contribute air defense systems and that the US would supply replacements.
Details about the specific equipment were limited, but Rutte noted the plan includes missiles and ammunition. Trump indicated that billions of dollars worth of defense support would be “quickly distributed.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the announcement, expressing gratitude for the willingness to provide continued support and cooperation toward achieving peace and stability.
In addition to the defense assistance, Trump said the US would introduce 100% secondary tariffs targeting remaining trade partners of Russia if a peace deal is not reached within the set timeframe. Under this plan, countries continuing certain trade activities could face high import taxes when selling products to the US, potentially impacting international trade flows.
European policymakers and US business groups have raised concerns about potential economic effects. The American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union noted that broad tariffs could create ripple effects across sectors in both economies.
The Moscow Stock Exchange Index rose following the announcement, as investors had anticipated potentially stricter measures.
Two rounds of ceasefire discussions between Russia and Ukraine were held earlier this year, but further meetings have yet to be confirmed. Ukrainian officials have stated they remain focused on strengthening their defensive capabilities and diplomatic efforts.
Additional reactions came from US legislators and European leaders, who emphasized the importance of continued security support and collaboration among allied countries.
