The Ministry of National Security’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation Team (DRRMT) is conducting a weeklong training session at Warwick Camp from February 24 to 28, focusing on the development of a National Risk Register (NRR). This initiative aims to enhance Bermuda’s preparedness for national emergencies by equipping stakeholders—including government ministries, departments, and businesses—with tools to identify and mitigate the island’s most pressing risks.
The training addresses various potential threats, such as hurricanes and other weather events, infrastructure failures in telecommunications and electricity, cyber incidents, supply chain disruptions affecting food and fuel, and socioeconomic challenges. Participants are engaging in hands-on exercises, collaborative discussions, and developing risk mitigation strategies to improve their readiness in responding effectively to these threats.
National Security Minister Michael Weeks emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that understanding and identifying potential threats allows for decisive actions to safeguard public safety, infrastructure, and the economy. He highlighted that emergencies can extend beyond natural disasters, citing examples like cyberattacks on local banks, significant shipping disruptions, or island-wide power outages, all of which could have severe consequences.
The DRRMT remains committed to enhancing readiness by keeping all agencies engaged, trained, and prepared to respond when needed.
