The governments of Sweden and the Philippines have engaged in discussions to enhance disaster preparedness and advance transportation projects. A Swedish delegation, including State Secretary Diana Janse and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) Director General Jakob Granit, visited the Philippines to strengthen bilateral relations.
In Clark, Pampanga, the delegation met with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation. The talks centered on collaborations to improve disaster resilience, with a focus on integrating Swedish technology into the Philippines’ disaster response framework. Sweden introduced its disaster relief initiative, Ericsson Response, and highlighted the deployment of ten Government Emergency Communications Service-Mobile Operations Vehicles (GECS-MOVE) across the nation.
Additionally, Sweden reaffirmed its support for the Subic-Clark-Manila-Batangas Freight Railway Project, facilitated through Swedfund. State Secretary Janse emphasized Sweden’s commitment to a lasting partnership with the Philippines, noting that Swedish investments contribute to job creation and technology transfer in the country.
In a related development, Sida and the Swedish government have signed a $200 million guarantee agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to fund climate change projects in Southeast Asia. This initiative aims to bolster regional efforts in combating climate change through sustainable investments.
These engagements reflect the ongoing collaboration between Sweden and the Philippines in areas of disaster management and infrastructure development, aiming to enhance resilience and economic growth.
