Japan is testing AI and sensor-based technologies designed to proactively reduce heatstroke risks among elderly people during periods of extreme heat.
The initiative combines AI, wearable devices, indoor sensors, and automated systems to monitor heat conditions and provide early warnings.
One system estimates core body temperature and alerts users through smartwatches, while another notifies family members when indoor temperatures become dangerous. A third system can automatically activate air conditioning based on room temperature.
The four-month trial involves 60–70 participants aged 65 and above and is expected to run through September.
If successful, the technology could receive broader government support from fiscal 2027, highlighting how connected technologies can improve safety, enable proactive monitoring, and support more resilient communities.
