TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Recent assessments from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) suggest that the ongoing geopolitical tensions between Iran and Israel have had minimal repercussions on Indonesian trade. This evaluation is based on an analysis of the relatively modest volume of trade between Indonesia and both nations. Amalia A. Widyasanti, Acting Head of BPS, remarked during a press conference held in Jakarta on Monday, April 22, 2024, that neither Iran nor Israel holds a prominent position among Indonesia’s key trading partners in the Middle East.

In 2023, Indonesia’s total international trade with the Middle East amounted to US$19.2 billion, with exports valued at US$9.06 billion, accounting for 3.05 percent of Indonesia’s overall exports. Imports from the region totaled US$10.13 billion, contributing 4.57 percent to Indonesia’s total imports. Among Middle Eastern countries, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman emerged as Indonesia’s primary trading partners.

Amalia further elaborated that Indonesia’s exports to Iran in 2023 totaled US$195.13 million, representing 2.15 percent of Indonesia’s total exports to the Middle East. Key export commodities to Iran included fruit, vehicles and parts, and various chemical products. Conversely, Indonesia’s imports from Iran amounted to US$11.72 million, constituting 0.12 percent of total imports from the Middle East. The main imports from Iran included fruit, fuel, and organic chemicals, resulting in a trade surplus of approximately US$183.41 million for Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Indonesia’s exports to Israel in 2023 reached US$165.77 million, with imports valued at US$21.93 million, making up 0.22 percent of Indonesia’s total imports from the Middle East. Despite the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, Indonesia’s trade with these nations has remained relatively unaffected, with the country maintaining stable trade relations within the region.
