Spain’s fresh produce exports saw significant growth during the January-July 2024 period, with a 9% increase in volume compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 7.6 million tonnes. Export value also rose by 3%, amounting to €11.21 billion. Vegetable exports totaled 3.6 million tonnes, a 9% rise, valued at €5.1 billion, although this represented a slight 1% decline in value. Peppers led the category with 512,837 tonnes exported, a 15% growth, valued at €1 billion. Tomato exports reached 468,144 tonnes, a 19% increase, though value dropped 10% to €725 million. Lettuce exports increased 4% to 464,501 tonnes, with a 5% decrease in value to €563 million.
In the fruit sector, exports reached 4 million tonnes, a 9% increase in volume, while the value grew 7% to €6.11 billion. Berries were particularly in demand, with strawberry exports totaling 251,072 tonnes, a 4% increase, and valued at €767 million, reflecting a 13% rise. Blueberry exports surged 20% to 82,971 tonnes, with a 15% increase in value, reaching €527 million.Stonefruit, such as nectarines, peaches, and cherries, also saw positive growth in both volume and value.
Imports
Spain also saw a 10% increase in the value of fresh produce imports during the same period, totaling €2.91 billion. Import volumes grew slightly by 0.4% to 2.4 million tonnes. The average price of imported fresh fruits and vegetables rose by 9%, according to the Department of Customs and Special Taxes. Vegetable imports saw an 8% rise in volume and a 15% increase in value, reaching 1.2 million tonnes and €935 million, largely driven by potatoes, which saw an 8.5% rise in volume and 17% growth in value, totaling 723,218 tonnes and €344 million. Tomato imports also increased by 6% in volume to 81,879 tonnes, valued at €104 million (a 4% rise).
On the fruit side, import volumes decreased by 6% to 1.3 million tonnes, while value increased by 7% to €1.97 billion. Bananas, avocados, oranges, and apples were the most imported fruits, with avocados being the only category to experience growth, with 146,846 tonnes imported, a 4% increase, and valued at €345 million, up 13%.
