South Korea and the United States are deepening cooperation on critical minerals, supporting efforts to build more diversified and resilient supply chains for advanced industries.
The initiative reflects growing efforts to expand domestic mining, processing, refining and manufacturing capacity for materials essential to semiconductors, artificial intelligence, batteries, energy and defense.
A planned integrated processing facility in the United States is expected to produce 12 nonferrous metals, including zinc, lead, copper and silver, alongside strategically important materials such as gallium, germanium, indium and antimony.
By combining refining expertise with US infrastructure, resources and policy support, the project could strengthen access to critical materials while reducing supply chain concentration risks.
The development also highlights the growing importance of integrated processing and recycling capabilities. Recovering multiple critical minerals from complex feedstocks and industrial byproducts could improve resource efficiency and accelerate the development of domestic supply networks.
For global supply chains, the broader trend points toward greater geographic diversification, stronger processing capacity and closer international cooperation as economies seek more reliable access to materials essential for next-generation manufacturing.
