South Korea Accelerates Trade Diversification as AI and Semiconductors Reshape Global Supply Chains

in Market Trends

South Korea is adapting its trade strategy as AI investment, semiconductor competition, tariffs and geopolitical risks reshape global commerce.

Global goods trade is expected to grow more slowly in 2026, but continued investment in AI, semiconductors, computers and data-center infrastructure is providing an important source of momentum.

At the same time, trade is increasingly moving beyond physical goods. Digital services—including cloud computing, software, data, finance and professional services—are becoming a larger part of international commerce, creating new opportunities for economies with strong technology and manufacturing capabilities.

For South Korea, the shift means strengthening its position across both advanced manufacturing and digital trade. Semiconductors, batteries, shipbuilding and other strategic industries remain important, while domestic R&D and component ecosystems can help maintain supply chain resilience as production expands overseas.

The evolving trade environment is also encouraging companies to look beyond cost efficiency. Supply security, diversification, carbon regulations, traceability and geopolitical exposure are becoming increasingly important factors in sourcing and investment decisions.

Rather than signaling the end of globalization, the trend points toward a more resilient form of global trade—one where AI, digital services and diversified Asian supply chains play a growing role in supporting international commerce.
