The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first export of 15,000 kg of GI-tagged Dalle Chilly from Sikkim to the Solomon Islands. This marks a significant step in expanding India’s spice exports and promoting the agricultural heritage of the North Eastern region.
Known for its intense pungency and vibrant red color, Dalle Chilly holds a Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) rating between 100,000 and 350,000. It received Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2020, recognizing its unique identity and boosting its market presence globally.
The consignment was sourced by Mevedir, an agri-export enterprise, in collaboration with farmer groups in South Sikkim, particularly in Tinkitam and Tarku. Farmers benefited from higher prices, receiving Rs 250-300 per kg, compared to the usual Rs 180-200 per kg.
Processing took place at an APEDA-funded Integrated Pack House established by the Department of Horticulture, Sikkim. Of the total quantity, 9,000 kg was dehydrated, while 6,000 kg was preserved for further processing and export. The drying process resulted in a 12.5% yield, with 1,600 kg of fresh chillies producing 200 kg of dried chillies for shipment.
This export aligns with government initiatives such as the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for the North Eastern Region (MOVCD-NER), which promotes organic farming and enhances global market access for Indian agricultural products.
The buyer was introduced to Sikkim’s Dalle Chilly in Singapore in 2023, leading to a direct sourcing agreement with Mevedir, highlighting growing international trust in India’s organic spice supply chain.
