China ASEAN Trade Strengthens Regional Supply Chains

in Trade Agreements

Trade between China and Southeast Asia continued to expand in 2026, supported by stronger industrial connections, growing intermediate goods trade and improving transport infrastructure across the region.

China ASEAN trade reached 4.34 trillion yuan in the first half of 2026, an 18.2 percent increase from the same period a year earlier. Trade in intermediate goods, including parts, components and production inputs, grew 24.5 percent to 2.86 trillion yuan, highlighting the increasing integration of regional manufacturing and supply networks.

Connectivity is also supporting this growth. Freight trains between Guangxi and Vietnam now operate daily, transporting electronics and machinery while bringing tropical fruits into China. Trade between Guangxi and ASEAN reached 248.21 billion yuan during the first seven months of 2026, while trade with Vietnam increased 3.3 percent to 183.71 billion yuan.

Regional trade agreements are helping businesses connect production activities across multiple markets. Under the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership rules of origin, materials from member economies can qualify as originating materials when incorporated into production in another member economy. This can support more efficient sourcing and cross border manufacturing.

Transport infrastructure is developing alongside these supply networks. The China Laos Railway handled 17.17 billion yuan in imports and exports during the first half of 2026, an increase of 33.8 percent year on year. The railway now carries more than 3,900 categories of goods and connects freight services with 19 countries and regions.

New infrastructure is also expanding regional connectivity. The Pinglu Canal in Guangxi is undergoing vessel trials ahead of its planned September opening. The 134.2 kilometer waterway will connect the Xijiang River system with the Beibu Gulf and shorten inland water transport routes from parts of southwest China to the sea by more than 560 kilometers compared with existing routes through Guangzhou.

The China ASEAN Free Trade Area is also evolving through its 3.0 Upgrade Protocol, signed in October 2025. The agreement covers areas including digital economy development, green economy cooperation, supply chain connectivity, customs procedures and trade facilitation. The protocol remains subject to domestic approval procedures before entering into force.

Growing business activity across Southeast Asia is further strengthening regional supply networks, with Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand among the preferred destinations for Chinese companies planning overseas expansion.

Overall, expanding trade agreements, intermediate goods flows, railways, waterways and cross border production networks are helping build stronger connections between China and ASEAN economies. These developments are positioning Southeast Asia as an increasingly important hub for regional manufacturing, sourcing and international trade.
